For hundreds of years, people living in Louisiana’s bayou country have spoken French. But rising sea levels, erosions and storms have submerged entire communities, forcing people to abandon their homes. The latest storm, 2021’s Hurricane Ida, killed 30 Louisianans, displaced tens of thousands of others and destroyed thousands of homes. Many native French speakers have had enough and are now dispersing to areas much further inland. Patrick Cox with the podcast “Subtitle” has the story.
